In an interview with Vesti.kz, junior team coach Vadim Gorbachevsky told about how his team - Gleb Brusensky and Yevgeny Fedorov - managed to get into history at the last Youth Olympics.

Success identified two years of intensive training. According to Gorbachevsky, in many ways the victim played the role of 100% medals at the Asian Championships.

Before the start of the Games, a competitive program of five races on the highway and in mountain biking was frightening. And confidence in the "gold" was not the guys or the coach himself.

- Vadim, what tasks set before the Olympics? Expected in the first place?

- Last year we went to the world championship and made sure that we were fighting at the level of the strongest rivals, so that we were firmly tuned to the podium. But the fact that "gold will take" - were not sure.

- How was the preparation carried out directly for the Youth Olympics?

- Preparations for the Olympics have been conducted for two years - the entire past season and the current one. Participated in international competitions. Gained points. Selected. We finished the year second in the ranking - it helped us a lot, we were able to start in the first positions at the Olympics. In mountain biking (MTB) this gives a strong advantage.

Junior women - Svetlana Pashchenko and Marina Kurnosova - there was no such opportunity. They performed well on the highway in the first two days, and in MTB they started in the last rows. This greatly influenced their outcome.

- In preparation for the Olympics, I had to completely change the calendar. In particular, donate the Asian Championships. Why did you make this decision?

- It was a difficult decision that I had to defend, since many regional coaches disagreed with me. And I do not regret it. I did not want to “roll” the guys.

The Olympiad is the main start of the season, and we should have approached it in maximum form. As a result, we abandoned the Asian Championship and began training together with mountain biking - with Alexander Dymovskiy (head coach of Kazakhstan on mountain biking) and his team. But at the ACh, we would definitely take two gold awards.

- Gleb and Yevgeny admitted that mountain biking is a complex type, but nevertheless the result was not bad. How did they manage to get into MTB in such a short time?

- The guys showed great strength of will and endurance in the period of preparation for the bike. It was very difficult for them. Before that, they, of course, involved in Kazakhstan's races in MTB, but UCI race - it is a completely different level. They start at 80-90 people, and they are ranked by rating.

In total, they drove five races, and the gap between our juniors and leaders was huge. Our caught for 15-20 minutes. But they understood that they needed it. In one of the races, where the track was not so technically challenging, Brusensky tenth drove in, and Fedorov - 12th.

- At the Youth Olympic Games were complex combined competitions consisting of five races. Scarecrow such a program?

- The program of the five species - it is very difficult. Honestly, at first I didn’t even know how to take the guys to this. Greater emphasis was placed on the highway. The task was to take the maximum two points for the first two days, because we are not strong on the bike. In the remaining teams, one driver was responsible for the highway, and the other for MTB. And we have - the two roadies.

It turned out as planned - in the first two days they took good points, so that even after the third disastrous day, they still remained leaders. On the fourth day, Zhenya Fedorov showed himself to be a real, adult athlete, professional. He tuned in to cross-country. His attitude played a big role, and he drove well through the fourth stage, although this is not his profile.

- Perhaps this was the advantage of our team, that they both are road racers? How do you think?

- I guess, yes. Although they took good points on the bike. In general, the spectacle system was interesting. 100 points for the first, 80 for the second, and so on. And for the sixth place already small glasses were. Our advantage was that Gleb and Eugene were both strong riders, both took good points. It is good that BMX is not yet included in the all-around. (laughs)

- Do you think that Pashchenko and Kurnosova were not enough for the podium?

- Objectively, they had fewer starts than the guys. They later learned about the license for the Olympics, there was less time to prepare. And in the competition they had a three-time world champion, European champion. Strong compounds. I consider their sixth place to be a good result.

- What about the technical equipment - were well equipped?

- On the highest level. Other teams even envied us. The Olympic Training Center bought us new MTB bicycles, Cannondale. These are top bikes, they ride pros. We also ride top bikes on the highway, bought the cycling federation last year. The girls a little easier, but also good. Bicycle team "Astana" helped us with the wheels. At the World Championships I approached Dmitry Sedun (sports director of “Astana” - editor's note), and said that we would soon go to the Olympics. They helped us: they gave wheels and two machines.

Of all the teams we had the only technicals. We rented it at the airport. In Buenos Aires it is impossible to train - unreal traffic jams. I managed to find a piece of the track, speeding up after the technicals. So the rest of the team were surprised that we even have our own car.

- Next season, Brusensky and Fedorov will join the Vino-Astana Motors continental cycling team. Do you think coaches will succeed in transferring their high results to the adult arena?

- Strong specialists work in this team, so they will not be lost. These are gifted guys. In addition, it so happened that they were from the same city, both of 2000, they always lived together, never had conflicts. Work smoothly, clearly. Worked out already. So, I think they will be able to show the result next year. The following year, Vino-Astana Motors had a good Andersky staff. In anders, the main thing is to pass the first year gently, not to go into all the races in a row. Competently go through the run-in program.

- What are your plans for the near future?

- Finally go home to Pavlodar, to the family. Home has not been for three months. This is the hardest part of the coach’s work - all the time traveling. The closest major start - Asian Championship in Uzbekistan. Task - medals. Of course, the contingent for the next year is weaker. Since we rested this year at the Olympics, we prepared the guys of the 2000th. This is where the 2001s turned a bit. Now 2002 will come. In the Asian Championship, we will bet on Popugayev, Hatpin, Drozhinin and Kazakevichus.
